Ericsson, Canadian government announce expanded R&D funding agreement

Ericsson and the Canadian government announced the signing of an expanded funding agreement that will see the company invest in research and development (R&D) capabilities at its Ottawa and Montreal research facilities.

Ericsson says its increased investment of $634.8 million CAD will help expand R&D operations and “create and upskill hundreds of jobs” over five years.

The company’s Ottawa and Montreal R&D centres will focus on the development of “quantum communications and AI-powered network management, while also expanding its Cloud RAN, 5G Advanced, and 6G capabilities.”

Ericsson also noted that the investment will help support expanding research facilities and staffing for quantum computing and also help grow the company’s partnerships with Canadian post-secondary institutions.

Speaking of post-secondary partnerships, Ericsson and Concordia announced an expanded partnership with a 10-year research and education agreement earlier this year. That partnership will see Ericsson and Concordia develop educational programs and research initiatives as well as provide students with access to Ericsson’s expertise and world-class facilities.
